My History:

• The Lotus Esprit had always been a dream car to own since the age of 7. This is probably like most owner's stories after first seeing it in James Bond. After buying my first Esprit in 2002, this was a 1990 carb turbo. It is a non-chargecooled 2.2 litre turbo producing 225BHP. It took many years of putting off buying an Esprit did I finally took the plunge. I use to trawl though the classifieds on Autotrader every fortnight at various Esprits but always disappointed because I couldn't afford one. Then out of the blue, about two weeks before Christmas 2002, I saw an advert for a 1990 Esprit turbo which was advertised only 10 miles away from where I lived! Previously I had not been tempted to buying one before (as I didn't have the funds) because they were always at the other side of the country. I couldn't believe my eyes and quickly decided that christmas was to come early from me! I said to myself that life was too short and I need to enjoy my passions in life.
• I soon contacted the owner and arranged to view it the very next day. I had little knowledge of the Esprit models but as soon as I saw it, I had to have it. By the way, this is not the way to buy an Esprit or in fact any car but Iam glad to say, it turned out to be a good car by pure chance really. On the test drive the previous owner asked me if I wanted to have a drive, which I did. It was then whilst braking to a roundabout, I realise how narrow the pedal box was. With my wide work shoes on, I accidentally caught the side of my foot with the accelerator whilst trying to brake. Instead of slowing down, we shot off towards the roundabout in the wet/ice. My life flashed before my eyes and it was by pure luck again (and the handling of the Esprit), I was able to steer around the roundabout, control the back end as it whipped out and straighten up again to the road ahead! I stopped the car 100 meters ahead and jumped out! I obviously couldn't appologise enough and suggest that the previous owner take over the controls. This could have been a very expensive lesson for me and I'd be left with a piles of pieces to buy!
• We got back and after some negotiations, we had a deal. 3 days later, I was due to collect the car on Friday 13th December 2002. I remember this day well as I was going to put off collecting it until the Monday. The money had been transfered so I didn't want to risk leaving the car having handed of the cash, so I took a chance.
• My wife wasn't too keen on the Esprit idea (to put it mildly) and there was some breakdown in comunications. As all this was happening, my wife was had been making plans for her annual Christmas party at work. Lets say diplomatically that either one failed to listen or the other failed to tell but she wasn't expecting to see an Esprit parked up the drive that Friday night. When she got out of the taxi late that night, all I could her from inside was 'What's that ******* Esprit doing up our driveway! Naturally, I was impressed that she was able to recognised an Esprit whilst drunk and knew my car brainwashing had worked.
• It was touch and go over the next few days and it took a month and a half for her to sit in it. Iam glad to say that she is on my insurance as a named driver and has been for all my Esprits.
